JAKARTA — This year, Nina Handayani will not be able to prepare any of the special dishes she used to make for her family every Ramadan.
"No meat, no chicken dishes, just vegetables," the Jakarta housewife told Agence France Presse (AFP) on Tuesday, September 2.
She also used to offer a traditional desert made with palm sugar and coconut milk and flavored with banana, sweet potato or cassava.
"But as everything has become very expensive we can't afford it anymore," added the 31-year-old mother of six in a somber voice.
Just like Handayani's, many cash-strapped families across the world's most populous Muslim nation are scrambling to cover expenses during the holy month, which began Monday, amid skyrocketing prices of foodstuffs and essentials.
Indonesia has seen a spike in the cost of food in the lead-up to Ramadan, putting pressure on families already hit by sharp rises in fuel prices.
Prices for essentials such as eggs, meat and cooking oil have surged over the past week
